You were looking forward to having time to tend your garden, brush up on your culinary skills, and seeing your grandchildren on a regular basis. Maybe, you could even pick up that novel you’ve been meaning to read for ages.

You’re ready for a career change. In fact, it’s past time you left your current industry. You want to work somewhere where you know you’re making a significant contribution to society and you can pass valuable knowledge onto the next generation. Basically, you want to become a teacher, and why wouldn’t you?

Considering a career change is never easy. You have to invest a considerable amount of time into researching new career opportunities, and there are numerous factors you have to take into consideration when searching for a second career.

Try to imagine a world without substitute teachers. A world where full-time teachers must fill in for their coworkers when they fall ill or take a personal day. A world where parents have no idea who will be teaching their children when their regular teacher is absent, principals struggle to track down someone to teach and students are falling behind in their learning because a qualified, trained substitute teacher is nearly impossible to find.

A recent substitute teacher shortage has had a significant impact on the school system. Parents, teachers, principals and, most importantly, students have all been negatively affected by a dwindling supply pool of substitute teachers. They may combine two classes, ask full-time teachers to forego their preparation time or have the principal or assistant principal step in to teach.
